DAY 2: One Pile That Stares at You
Hey friend, welcome to Day 2 of the Classroom Declutter Challenge!
Firstâcan we just take a moment to celebrate?
You made it through Day 1, and that is huge. I saw those before and after photos coming in, and I just want to sayâyou all are killing it. That clear desk energy? Itâs real. And youâre feeling it already.
If you havenât tackled Day 1 yet, itâs not too late! Go back, clear off your desk, and listen to that Day 1 audio first. This challenge builds on itselfâand I promise, itâs worth it.
Nowâif you did complete Day 1, I want you to think back to how it felt walking into your classroom this morning.
That breath of calm. That moment of, âWait⌠is this what itâs supposed to feel like?â
Thatâs the feeling weâre chasing today too.
So letâs talk about paper. I knowâdeep breath, right?
Todayâs task is simple and should take no more than 10 minutes. Just like yesterday, I kept it short on purpose. Because I know if I told you to declutter all your paper, youâd either laugh or cryâor maybe both.
So instead, hereâs what weâre doing:
Find one paper pile.
Not the whole box you cleared off your deskâthatâs for later.
Iâm talking about the one stack thatâs been sitting out⌠staring at you. Maybe itâs on your small group table, shoved in a turn-in bin, or stacked behind your doc cam. You know the one.
Thatâs your target for today.
And hereâs how to tackle it:
-
Set a timer for 10 minutes.
-
Sort that pile into three quick categories:
-
Keep â stuff you actually need
-
Toss or recycle â anything thatâs outdated, duplicated, or random
-
Action â things that still need to get done (put these in a folder or tray labeled âTo Doâ)
-
To help make sorting even easier, Iâve included some simple printable labels you can use. But honestly? A sticky note with âKeep,â âToss,â and âActionâ works just fine. Donât overcomplicate it.
Youâre not trying to conquer paper once and for allâyouâre just proving to yourself that paper clutter doesnât have to own you. And thatâs a powerful mindset shift.
If sorting this one pile made you realize just how much paper is floating around your classroomâyouâre not alone.
This is where most teachers feel stuck. And itâs exactly why I created systems inside The Organized Teacher Club to help you manage all of itâgrading piles, lesson plans, copies, forms, you name it.
The Club is full of plug-and-play systems that make it so much easier to keep paper under controlâwithout spending hours after school.
Extra credit, if youâre on a roll:
-
Declutter a second pile using the same 3-step system
-
Label your new âTo Doâ folder or tray and place it somewhere easy to access
-
Glance through your inbox or teacher bagâif thereâs a mini pile of papers in there, give it a quick triage too
Only if you have the time and energy. If not? You did enough. Day 2 = done.
And donât forgetâsnap a photo! Show us your before and after in the group. Not only will it motivate someone else to jump in, but remember: everyone who shares their photos during the challenge gets entered to win a free annual membership to The Organized Teacher Club.
Youâre doing amazing. Iâm proud of you.
See you tomorrow.
