DAY 2: One Pile That Stares at You

Hey friend, welcome to Day 2 of the Classroom Declutter Challenge!

First—can we just take a moment to celebrate?
You made it through Day 1, and that is huge. I saw those before and after photos coming in, and I just want to say—you all are killing it. That clear desk energy? It’s real. And you’re feeling it already.

If you haven’t tackled Day 1 yet, it’s not too late! Go back, clear off your desk, and listen to that Day 1 audio first. This challenge builds on itself—and I promise, it’s worth it.

Now—if you did complete Day 1, I want you to think back to how it felt walking into your classroom this morning.
That breath of calm. That moment of, “Wait… is this what it’s supposed to feel like?”
That’s the feeling we’re chasing today too.

So let’s talk about paper. I know—deep breath, right?

Today’s task is simple and should take no more than 10 minutes. Just like yesterday, I kept it short on purpose. Because I know if I told you to declutter all your paper, you’d either laugh or cry—or maybe both.

So instead, here’s what we’re doing:

Find one paper pile.
Not the whole box you cleared off your desk—that’s for later.
I’m talking about the one stack that’s been sitting out… staring at you. Maybe it’s on your small group table, shoved in a turn-in bin, or stacked behind your doc cam. You know the one.

That’s your target for today.

And here’s how to tackle it:

  • Set a timer for 10 minutes.

  • Sort that pile into three quick categories:

    1. Keep – stuff you actually need

    2. Toss or recycle – anything that’s outdated, duplicated, or random

    3. Action – things that still need to get done (put these in a folder or tray labeled “To Do”)

To help make sorting even easier, I’ve included some simple printable labels you can use. But honestly? A sticky note with “Keep,” “Toss,” and “Action” works just fine. Don’t overcomplicate it.

You’re not trying to conquer paper once and for all—you’re just proving to yourself that paper clutter doesn’t have to own you. And that’s a powerful mindset shift.

If sorting this one pile made you realize just how much paper is floating around your classroom—you’re not alone.
This is where most teachers feel stuck. And it’s exactly why I created systems inside The Organized Teacher Club to help you manage all of it—grading piles, lesson plans, copies, forms, you name it.
The Club is full of plug-and-play systems that make it so much easier to keep paper under control—without spending hours after school.

Extra credit, if you’re on a roll:

  • Declutter a second pile using the same 3-step system

  • Label your new “To Do” folder or tray and place it somewhere easy to access

  • Glance through your inbox or teacher bag—if there’s a mini pile of papers in there, give it a quick triage too

Only if you have the time and energy. If not? You did enough. Day 2 = done.

And don’t forget—snap a photo! Show us your before and after in the group. Not only will it motivate someone else to jump in, but remember: everyone who shares their photos during the challenge gets entered to win a free annual membership to The Organized Teacher Club.

You’re doing amazing. I’m proud of you.
See you tomorrow.
